CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY: JOHN MARKOE, S.J.
Creighton University’s John Markoe, S.J. was ordained a priest in the Society of Jesus 1928.
He as known as a civil rights advocate—and by some, as a troublemaker.
He dedicated his life to fighting racial injustice and, up until his death in 1967,
helped galvanize the De Porres Club of Omaha, which,
four years before the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott, launched a similar campaign
against the Omaha and Council Bluffs Street Railway Company.
A staunch ally in the struggle against racism, he followed his own advice,
often imparted on friends, colleagues and students: “Never give an inch.”
